Essential Tips for Writing the Perfect Resume

News flash!  Writing your resume is not the easiest part of the job search.  Most of the time it is your only way in. Your resume is your gateway to an interview, especially in a virtual job search environment. It is crucial to present yourself effectively on paper.

Basic Layout:

  • Keep it one or two pages long.
  • Tailor it to the specific job for which you are applying.
  • Ensure there are no typos or grammatical errors.

Objective or Opening Statement:

  • Make it specific and impactful.
  • Keep it to two or three sentences.
  • Include the name of the position.
  • Speak with confidence as if you know you are going to get the job.

Experience/Work History:

  • Use a bulleted format.
  • Tailor it to the type of job.
  • Utilize action words like reporting, monitoring, creating, managing, and training.

Job History Length:

  • For internal jobs, list the start and end years for each position.
  • For external jobs, be prepared to explain job-hopping or long gaps between jobs.

Additional Information:

  • Education – Avoid making it time-bound.
  • Certificates – Only list those relevant to the job.
  • Software/Technical Skills – List only unique or required software, avoid basic skills like Microsoft Office.
