Managing Your Career – Managing in Place!

Whether you know it or not, you are always managing your career.

Either by doing nothing, staying in the same place and not moving forward.

Or…

Taking action that allows you to learn and grow.

You may say – “I am happy where I am and don’t need to work on managing my career.”

I beg to differ.  Being happy in the job or career you have is great.

Every employer needs people that want to do what they are currently doing for a long time.

You can continue in the same role while learning and growing!

Think about it –

Whatever you are doing, don’t you want to get better at it?

Take a moment to list the skills required to do your job and rate your self –

Are you novice – a beginner, new to it or learning as you go?

Are you confident – know what you are doing, comfortable performing?

Are you an expert – you have mastered the skill, you can teach others, ready to take on more?

Until you are “expert”, you should be working to move to the next level.

When you feel like an expert, it’s time for you to check out my “Let’s get moving” blog.

If you are not sure – Ask your boss or a coworker to rate you on their own, then compare notes.

When you have the final assessment, it’s time to make a plan to move from novice to confident and then to expert.

If you are wondering what that plan should look like, check out my blog on jump starting your career.
