Jump Start Your Career!

7 things I have learned that you need to accept:

  1. Quit pointing the finger
  2. Get off the Titanic
  3. 10% of the people you know are willing to help you
  4. Get back to basics
  5. Never expect immediate results
  6. Focus on your health
  7. Call to action

I have coached and mentored dozens and I have discovered most people are not moving forward because they are not taking action. You must be purposeful (like a dog with a bone) if you want to move the needle.  It will not happen by osmosis.

If you’re beginning to feel like your career is challenging you in all the wrong ways, maybe it’s time to take stock of your situation and get it back on track.

Quit pointing the finger

“Quit pointing the finger and accept that what’s happening or not happening is on you. Only you can change your career situation”.

It is imperative that you spend time working on your development and preparing for the next opportunity.  That means setting aside time to work on it.  Be selfish and make it a priority. Career development takes effort and time.  There is no way to avoid it.

Get Off the Titanic

No one is going to save you – save yourself!

Jack had to tell Rose they needed to leave the ship or they would die. Don’t wait until you have that type of crisis.

If you have not taken the time to explore, don’t you dare leave your company because “there is nothing here for me”. It is on you to network, ask questions, review job opportunities, seek advice and assistance, etc.

10% of the people you know want to help you

Of course, this one is near and dear to my heart because I am one of the 10% that is willing to help you move forward.  There is someone in your sphere that is willing to do the same for you.

  • Find them
  • Worship them
  • Share, listen and take action
  • Follow up with them
  • Pay it forward when you get the chance

Get back to basics – maintain positive habits or start them

You got where you are by taking some initiative.  That should not stop.  You should be trying to grow everyday. Not a joke!

Get back to the habits that got you where you are now.  Set goals, make a to do list, etc. Old school habits will never die.

Never expect immediate results

Confidence, patience and resilience should be top of mind for what it is going to take to get this done. Ask anyone you know with a decent job, and they will tell you it took more than one attempt to get there.  This is true from your team member to executives or owners of the business.

Focus on your health

Get rid of the junk in your life that is keeping you from focusing on what you want.  We all have outside factors to deal with, but you must have a certain mindset to set and accomplish goals.

That does not mean it is okay to put this off because of family or personal issues.  Clean them up, move yourself to a place where you can focus on you. Be that selfish!
