Top Interview Tips to Land Your Dream Job
Let’s face it. Interviewing is not easy or fun. My goal is to help you –
- Be prepared
- Impress
- Stand out from the competition
- Ace It!
Do your research –
Know as much about the company and it’s culture as you can. Their website should have a wealth of information for you to absorb. If you know someone that works there, they can give you even more valuable insights.
Why is this important? It can help you frame your answers. Use those buzz words that resonate with them – customer centric, innovative, growth, profit, etc.
Practice, Practice, Practice –
- Know the skills and behaviors you will be expected to bring to the job.
- Come up with your best examples (at least 3 per skill or competency).
- Talk through your examples aloud. It’s the only way to perfect telling your story. Each time you do it you will get better.
- Get the family or a friend to help. Practice by sharing your examples with an audience. Yes, the pressure will be on, but it is a great way to get ready. Ignore the fact that they won’t know much about the subject matter. Last resort, go over your examples in front of a mirror or your pet!
- Quantify your results. Have facts, anecdotal comments, survey results, metrics or KPIs. You want to be able to back up your results versus saying “it went well” or “everyone loved it”. Always be prepared to share how you know it went well.
- Instead of asking a question at the end of the interview. Take the time to tell them “Why you are the best person for the job”.
Follow this method and you will stand out from the crowd!
