For the Ladies – Discovering the Mars & Venus of Job Hunting

Remember the book “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” by John Gray? Well, it turns out, job searching might just be another interplanetary adventure. We approach job opportunities quite differently, so let’s chat about that.

Confidence over Caution: Women’s Guide to Competing Toe-to-Toe!

Some Disclaimers

  • I am not a psychologist
  • I will be speaking in generalities based on what I have observed over my many years in the workplace
  • Observations and life experience and knowledge of my own culture
  • Bottom line is we are wired differently for a myriad of reasons

My point here is to give you some things to think about as you make career decisions.

When Considering Career Advancement

Men

  • Preferred skills – men look to have 70% of them (Per my research, but I believe that number is too high)
  • Spring into action
  • Go for it and figure out how to do the job once they get it
  • More willing to jump into doing something whether they know how or not

Women

  • Preferred skills – women look to have 90% of them
  • We worry that we are not bringing enough to the position or, better yet, that we are not perceived as bringing enough to the position
  • Are concerned about being able to prove ourselves and make a good impression

What We Say During an Interview

As women, have you found yourself saying?

  • “I think”
  • “I believe”
  • “I’ve only done this for 2 years”
  • “I’ve just done or only done”
  • Saying “we” instead of “I” when sharing your story

You might think it makes you sound less pushy or more humble, but you might be indicating you are less qualified.

Result – you could be discriminated against because of your tone.

Men

A man is more conditioned to being bold, bragging, or proving what he has done. This can make it easier or allow him to feel more comfortable taking full credit (not that he is not due the credit). It’s all in how you convey it or tell your story.

So ladies, let’s channel a bit of that Mars energy!

Be bold, brag when you’ve earned it, and remember, it’s all in the story you tell.

Now go out there and conquer the career universe!

Balancing the playing field does not mean changing who you are. Embrace your individuality and use it to your advantage. By being conscious of certain habits and making slight adjustments, you can level the playing field and present yourself in a powerful light.

Embrace Confidence

Confidence is key to success and can be nurtured through preparation and practice. Start by reviewing a list of your skills and experiences to build your self-assurance. This foundation will empower you to speak about your accomplishments with conviction.

Allocate 30 minutes each week to read articles related to your industry or field of work and catch up on company communications. Treat this time as you would a meeting—commit to it as time for self-improvement.

Set smaller, achievable goals, track your progress, and celebrate your milestones. Maintain a “me file” of accomplishments to remind yourself of your growth and to use as a resource for your resume.

Advocate for Yourself

Stop worrying about others’ opinions and start building a brand that reflects your strengths and achievements.

Overcome self-imposed barriers by stepping out of your own way and confidently advocating for your capabilities.

By being aware of these idiosyncrasies and making slight changes, you can level the playing field and shine in your career.

Be bold, own your story, and conquer the career universe with confidence!

Remember, the journey is meant to be enjoyed, so embrace each moment and celebrate your progress.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic!
